Hi! I’m Laura,

I am James Day’s brand new employee.

Even though I have only just started today, James has already taught me heaps about what he does and what he hopes for me to be doing while working with him. I have been learning about photoshop and I have been helping to edit some of James’ recent wedding shots. I was suprised to see that a lot of the shots really don’t need much editing because of the way James has used the light and his surrounding to his advantage when actually taking the photo. So for the moment, I will be practicing my editing skills and doing all of James’ running around for him while he does all the important stuff. He WILL teach me the tricks of being a fantastic phtotographer, though, whether he likes it or  not… eventually.

And I’m going to tell you about me whether YOU like it or not!  I was born in Armidale and i have lived here my whole life so far.  I went to school here up until i finished year 11 when I decided that I wanted to study child care. I finished my certificate three in children’s services and began studying for my diploma. I have always wanted to do something creative for a living so when the opportunity came along to work with James i had to take it, it’s lots of fun and will probably only get better from here.

I am in a constant state of dance, standing still is not an option, I have been taking dance classes since I was 12 and I have improved very slightly :) I also love sports, I play soccer and hockey though hockey is my favourite, I have been playing since I was 5 and i have actually improved believe it or not. Although I can’t play an instrument my self anymore, I barely ever go anywhere with out music. I love to listen to Angus and Julia Stone, Regina Spektor, Gomez and Death cab for cutie, to name a few. One of my favourite bands ever are the Discards. (Who James photographed, by the way) So check that out. I enjoy eating raw fish, yes I could live on sushi if I had to.

I’m looking forward to getting to know you all through this blog and at weddings or wherever I may meet you.

Laura :)

Gemma & Grant (a beautiful beginning)

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

My favourite of all photoshoots, a beautiful beginning photoshoot. It’s where I meet up with the bride and groom in the months before their wedding where we spend some time getting to know each other, creating amazing images and I get to know a little more of their love for each other. Gemma & Grant are a very beautiful, close, and loving couple that I really enjoyed getting to know.. and am really looking forward to photographing their wedding in a few weeks in Evans Head.

We took these photos around the surf life saving building in Lennox Head a few weeks back when I was in the area photographing the Young Life Study Camp, for year 12 students who are now sitting their HSC exams.

Gemma is a keen photographer herself, and It seems I’m finding that a greater percentage of my clients are into photography than ever before. I actually kinda like it, because I get to teach them a few things that they can use in their own photography as I shoot..

Please feel free to leave me some comment love. It’s nice to know that people are checking out the site and appreciating my images.

Connie & Andrew (wedding in Nundle)

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Firstly, I must say a huuuge thank you to Nick & Emily who referred Connie & Andrew to me. Choosing these photos was quite a battle! I had WAAAAAAAAAAY too many photos to choose from which were good enough for the Inspiration Journal and so I had to call in a favour from a few friends to help me choose (thank you  friends).

While Connie & Andrew live in Sydney, they found a great location to get married, in Nundle. I’ve never been here before. It’s an old mining town in the middle of nowhere. I believe Connie & Andrew had to lie just a little bit to their friends as to how long it took to get there just so they would get them to come. It’s quite a trek!

Let’s get into these gorgeous images!

I wish I owned a copy of these books. Connie – Where do you think I could find them?

It seems getting your veil put in can be quite painful!

I think the girls thought I was going to run off with the shoes. I liked them a little bit too much…

Andrew’s wedding ring was made by John W Thompson, who made the rings for  the Lord of the Rings movies.

I loved this old antique store in Nundle.

3 Silver Awards at the APPA awards

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Recently, I was honoured by having 3 of my images awarded with a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography Awards. I have never entered any images before and it was quite mindblowing for me that the first time I enter I come back with this result. I had considered entering before, but I was too chicken to!

The first image was taken at Alex & Danika’s Wedding, which took place about a year ago in Armidale at St Peters Cathedral. This moment was quite special when the bride’s grandfather (or Poppy as they call him) called his newly married granddaughter over for a photo. He was very proud and obviously very excited to be taking a photo of her on her wedding day!

The next image that won a silver award was this image of Mick & Terri at their wedding last year.  It was quite incredible having the two Alpacas (or Llamas, or whatever they are!) pose so perfectly for us!

This image of grandparents is from Nick & Emily’s Wedding which was a sweet little moment that I happened to capture.

Where on earth is James Day?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Firstly, it’s been that long since I’ve updated my blog that I had forgotten my user name and password for my blog. Thankfully there are ways to reset these things!

I’ve had a few people ask whether maybe I haven’t had anything to blog. Quite the opposite in fact. I’ve been so busy, that I had to make a decision as to where I could simplify my life, so that I could look after my clients without making them wait for me to work on their images for too long. As a result, I believe that I now have some of the fastest turnaround times across the industry, even though I’m hectic busy.

Things will change though, I’ve found a way where I will be able to blog very regularly and not have it take up too much time. There’s something pretty exciting in the works, but I can’t share it quite yet!

There is so much to share, and I’m going to start working overtime so that I can share it with you and not make you wait any longer.

As soon as this blog post is published, I will start working on another blog post with some exciting news and images!
